Child marriage in India

Child marriage is breaking the basic human right. Child marriage is means that a marriage in which is below the age of eighteen at the time of consummation. The child marriage in India is deeply rooted in culture. Due the women’s shorter reproductive life period, the children marriage tends to be of young girl to fully-grown men. Child marriage can affect the girl health.

In some states of India like Rajasthan, nearly 80% of girl marriages are under the age of fifteen. In India roughly 47.6 percent girl are married by the age of eighteen. This marriage at the young age of girl can affect the health as well as the children born out of the marriage.

In 1929, the Child Marriage Restraint Act is enforcing to curb the practice. Under the act, the legal marriageable age set as 12 years, which is later revise to 18 years in 1978. That time the government paid attention to this issue. In most of the cases, the parent or guardians instigate the child marriage. If somebody not fellow the rule they will be punished. The punishment may extend to these parties is three-month imprisonment or also subjected to fine. The penalty is valid when parents have not consent to marriage.

Anyone who performs or conducts the child marriage ceremony like a priest, In this case the penalty is three months imprisonment and fine. This party may escape if he prove that he was unaware that the bride and bridegroom are minors. If the bridegroom is above 21 years is marring with a minor in that case he will be imprisonment and pay fine as well. If the bride is below 21 but above 18, the maximum duration of imprisonment is 15 days.

The government creates the National Plan of Children in 2005, claiming to eliminate the child marriage to eliminate child marriage entirely by 2010. Now we have entered to 2010 the issue continue to subject.
